Easy editing of website without using CMS
If you want easily edit your website online, and don’t need the facilities that a full CMS (Content Management System) like users and templates, is here a free and effective alternative:
- Start the Internet browser program Netscape – If you don’t have it installed you can download it free on http://www.netscape.com/download/ (click on ‘Free Download’).
- Enter your website and go to the page you wish to edit – could be www.your-domain.com/sales.html.
- Press [CTRL] and the letter [e] at the same time (as in Edit).
- You should now be looking at a so-called WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor. Editing is done like you would do in a word processor program like MS Word.
- When you have finished editing the page you simply close the window by clicking the cross in the top right corner of the window.
- Netscape will now ask if you want to ’Publish’ your changes. If you want to do this, simply click the button ‘Publish’ – otherwise click ‘Don't Publish’. We assume here that you pressed ’Publish’.
- First time you choose publish the dialog ’Publish page’ will appear – alternatively you could have found the dialog in the menu ‘File’ and the choose ‘Publish as..’.
- In the dialog ’Publish page’ you need to fill out the fields as follows – where your-domain.com is replaced by your actual domain name:
‘ftp username’ should be replaced by the username that you normaly use when accessing your website via FTP and ’Password’ is of course the associated password for the ftp user. - Then choose the tab ‘Publish’, and fill it out as follows:
"Page title:" is the title you see in the window top bar in the top of your browser window when you view the page. The other fields are filled out as needed. - Now click the button ’Publish’ to start the transfer of the file to the server.
- When you see the dialog ’Publishing completed’ the page has been transferred to the server and the changes can now be viewed by the visitors.
This is how easy and cheap you can make a webpage if the needs are few and the editing is very limited. If your needs are different – for instance if you are several people that edit the pages and you want to insure a common design and look of the pages. If this is the case you should look at using a content management system. For further information contact support or see our website.
